You know that feeling that you get when you are about to step out of an airplane, looking straight down, wondering what the hell you are doing? You start panicking, wondering if you are hooked up correctly to all of your cords, praying your parachute does not have a hole in it. Yeah, me neither, I've never been skydiving. But now that I have gotten the response from my mother, I think I can imagine how it feels before you jump out of the plane.

I did not meet my mother until my sophomore year of high school when she reached out to my father and me, and there was little contact until now. At twenty-one years old, I have reached out to open doors again in hopes of getting to know my mother.

This open-ended project is a story about a mother who abandoned her daughter and the journey of healing a broken relationship. “Dear Caroline” is about the process of healing and learning how to forgive. It is an honest perspective of the good, the bad, and the ugly moments that we encounter on the road to forgiveness. I hope this project can be a healing point for my mother and I, but perhaps it can also be a healing point for others, or a way to start their own mending, and realizing that we are all human.
